Are you Unique?

June 1st, 2011

Years ago one of my business mentors taught me this rule…

If an industry is rapidly expanding, an easy strategy is to copy the leaders and grow with the industry. For example, back in the 1990′s Dell copied IBM’s personal computer and grew into a huge corporation. They eventually overtook IBM and became the leader in the pc market. But if an industry is not expanding or if it is contracting, you have to stand out in the crowd in order to grow…and copies never stand out in the crowd!

I believe it is going to be extremely important for you to stand out by becoming unique in 2011.

The funeral home market is getting more and more crowded; there are more discount service providers popping up all over the place, the cremation societies are spreading across the country. Families who used to go to your funeral home are now holding a memorial gathering at the country club (without your help). If you do not have a way to establish yourself in the market, and to truly be unique, you will only be headed for more and more price problems this year.

Seeing is Believing

February 10th, 2011

The following is a short essay that I wrote for one of my clients who was struggling to explain the importance of having the body present at a visitation. I eventually sent it out to my entire email list (3,500+) and it turned out to be the most popular email I’ve ever sent.

Seeing is believing….

Most people have heard the old saying “seeing is believing”… but many people have also lived through a life experience which gave them a deep, emotional understanding of this simple phrase.

Consider what happens when a parent receives call from their child’s school saying that their child has been hurt on the school yard. They’re told that the child is ok but still they’ll spend the rest of their work day counting the minutes…waiting to see their child….because seeing is believing. » Read more: Seeing is Believing

What’s Your Plan for 2011?

January 20th, 2011

It’s that time of the year again….planning time.

It happens every year. Business slows down around Thanksgiving and we coast through the Christmas season. I like that predictable cycle because it gives me a chance to focus on my family and the spirit of the season.

As soon as we hit January all heck breaks loose as many funeral home owners suddenly decide that they were not satisfied with their 2010 numbers and it’s time to develop a new plan.

This year I received the first “I need some strategic help” email on New Years Day!

Even with the economy picking up a bit, 2010 was still a rough year for most funeral home owners. If their call volume was good, the margins were still smaller than they wanted and the bottom line suffered.

It’s pretty obvious….it’s time for a new plan.

In this article I am going to describe 5 strategic planning myths that are common among funeral home owners and managers.

Myth #1 – Families don’t have any money

There is no doubt that the economy has hurt a lot of families. Rampant unemployment, stock market ups and downs, and the crash of the housing market have combined to wipe out the nest egg of many families.

Why is it then that the average amount spent on a wedding in 2010 an all time high of $27,852? That’s a 100% increase since 1990.

They stole your spot

October 8th, 2010

They stole your spot. They swooped in while you were busy taking care of families and took your spot…and you should be furious!

The spot I am referring to is your first page ranking on the three dominant Internet search engines Google, Yahoo and Bing. Google has about 65% of the market. Yahoo and Bing both have approximately 13% each.

In our Internet driven world if you are not on the first page of the search engines you are on your way out of business. Fortunes are literally won or lost on the first page. According to Google 87% of all clicks happen on the first page, 10% on the second page and a measly 3% left for everyone else.

Is Copying Hurting Your Business?

July 25th, 2010

I’ll remember it for the rest of my life…I was 9
years old and in grade 4. When suddenly, out of the
blue, my best friend and I were called down to the
principal’s office for copying each others work.

That was the day that I experienced the sting of the
principal’s “strap” on the back of the hands for the
first and last time.

I remember explaining to my mother that night that we
weren’t cheating….we were collaborating. She didn’t
buy my excuse either…

Your Ideal Family

June 13th, 2010

There are dozens of different factors that will
influence the success or failure of your funeral home
business.

But the number one issue that I believe every funeral
home owner must address is…your focus, more
specifically your ability to focus on attracting your
ideal family.

First Impression

May 11th, 2010

Everyone in business knows that first impressions are
very important.

When a family walks in your door you want them to feel
like they have entered a safe haven.

Everything they see, smell, hear, and touch helps them
to form their first impression of your funeral home.
It’s rarely a conscious decision but rather a
subconscious impression that will influence their
lasting opinion of you and your business.

Yellow Pages

March 2nd, 2010

You’re trapped…and the Yellow Pages sales rep knows
it.

He is sitting their counting his commissions as you
make that gut wrenching decision to continue your
Yellow Pages ad for another year.

Do you do a quarter page ad, a third page, maybe even
a half page? Do you try to jump ahead of your
competitors by buying a bigger ad? Do you cut back on
your ad and hope it doesn’t hurt your business?

The 3 Reasons People Don’t Buy

February 12th, 2010

Every week I take at least a couple of hours to read
over my personal marketing journals. They’re nothing
too elaborate looking, just a series of note books
that I’ve kept for years…but they’re worth a
fortune to me. In these journals I record any
marketing “wisdom” that I come across or that I
learned from my own experiences. If my office ever
catches on fire these journals would the first thing
I’d save…

Here’s something that I recorded in 2002. It will
definitely help you grow your funeral home…..
(if you apply it)

Marketing Predictions for 2010

January 2nd, 2010

I have received at least a dozen emails over the last week asking my thoughts on 2010 as it relates to funeral home marketing. So here it goes…

My crystal ball is in front of me and I’m entering into a psychic trance (not really but the imagery
seemed appropriate).

Here are the top 5 things that I see happening in funeral home marketing in 2010..

New FTC Guidelines

December 12th, 2009

The FTC is at it again. Yes the same organization that brought you the General Price List and has come up with a new way to protect consumers from unscrupulous business practices.

It is important for you to know that these new regulations are not directly targeted at the funeral home industry; they are far broader reaching than that. In fact, these new regulations have the power to impact every business that advertises (which means just about every business out there).

Who Do You Compete With?

November 4th, 2009

There’s an old story that you’ve probably heard…

Two hikers see a bear ahead of them on the path. The
bear starts chasing them when one of the hikers stops
to put on his running shoes. The first hiker screams
“What are you doing? Running shoes aren’t going to
help you out run the bear”. The second hiker replies
“I don’t have to out run the bear. I just have to out
run you”

Yes, it’s a silly story but it illustrates and
important business point.

In the world of business, if you have a clear
understanding of who you are competing with you can
take decisive action and survive a bear market (sorry,
but that was too easy of a pun to pass up).

The Healing Mistake

October 25th, 2009

This newsletter will be short because it won’t take
too long to make the point…

Back in March of this year I sent out a newsletter
with the title of “How to Market Healing”. That
newsletter was very well received and I had a lot of
very positive feedback.

Where Most Marketing Fails

September 20th, 2009

Why is marketing so hard? Actually, I should say…why
is effective marketing so hard?

Marketing has only one goal…to grow your funeral
home business. If it’s not doing that then your
marketing isn’t working properly.

But if your marketing is broke how do you know what
you’re supposed to fix? Should you switch from TV to
radio? Should you change your newspaper ads? Should
you do online advertising?

The Elephant in the Room

August 9th, 2009

Have you heard the saying “the elephant in the room”?

If not, it refers to those times in life when you have
a large, ever present issue that no one wants to talk
about.

For every business owner I know, “the elephant in the
room” today is….the economy.

And more specifically, the dreaded ‘R’ word…
recession.

The Power of a Rose

July 12th, 2009

This isn’t the newsletter I was planning on sending out.
Plus it’s two weeks later than scheduled and for that I
apologize.

Sadly, there was a very personal reason for the delay.
On June 27th my mother passed away. The matriarch of our
family, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and
friend to all…was gone.

As a funeral home marketing consultant I felt that I had
a pretty good grasp on the importance of a healing
funeral experience. I had worked with dozens of leading
funeral homes around the country to market and deliver
amazing funeral experiences.

But it’s one thing to understand the funeral process
intellectually. It’s another thing to experience it
emotionally.

Marketing Personalization

April 25th, 2009

Personalization….you hear about it at every trade
show, you hear about it from every merchandise vendor,
and you read about it in every trade magazine.

Ten years ago only a small percentage of funeral home
owners had jumped on the personalization bandwagon.
Today…the situation has completely reversed. If
you’re not personalizing every service you’re a rare
(and probably struggling) funeral home.

How to Market Healing

March 25th, 2009

I decided to take a bit of a gamble with the subject
of this newsletter….”how to market healing”.

The key issue is the word “healing”.

Sadly, there are a lot of funeral service
professionals who still think that they are in the
business of providing compassionate care for the
deceased.
